Audi RS3 review – MPG and running costs

Despite boasting one more cylinder than most rivals, the RS3’s MPG is relatively competitive

Evo rating
  • Stunning engine, quality cabin, improved dynamics
  • Expensive, composed but cold handling means it's faster than it is fun

Audi’s continued development of the RS3’s 2.5-litre turbocharged engine has helped it remain competitive against most rivals, despite packing an extra cylinder. At 34mpg it is far from the 40mpg+ that the Golf R is able to muster on paper, but considering the prodigious performance on offer it is still an impressive number. Take it steady on a long run (not difficult given the glutenous flow of modern traffic) and you can edge you consumption into the high 30s. Not very evo, but impressive nonetheless.

Overall running costs are likely to be a little higher than your mainstream hot hatch, but be careful of options like the carbon ceramic brakes, which might be a bit of a shock come disc and pad replacement time - although in fairness you'd be doing well to wear out a set of carbon ceramic discs.
