BMW 5-Series (new)

So, the award for the highest-placed BMW in Driver Power goes to the latest 5-Series. It is, you say, the most complete model in the range, and it’s also the only BMW never to have dropped out of the Driver Power top 10 since its debut in 2005.

So what’s the secret of its success? Well, the driving experience is great – you love the accurate steering, responsive engine range and strong brakes. Rock-solid build quality, high levels of comfort and reliability impress, too. Running costs come in for some criticism, and while nearly 80 per cent of owners have plumped for a diesel to minimise fuel costs, it seems it’s difficult to escape from high servicing and parts prices. You’d also like the saloon version to offer a bit more space. Apart from that, though, a great result.

Your Quotes

“The engine is superb and handling is remarkable for a large saloon. Add economy in excess of 41mpg and low insurance, and it’s the best car I’ve owned.”

MANUFACTURER VERDICT

With solid build quality and an engaging driving experience, there’s plenty of satisfaction to be had in a BMW. You would like to see more in the way of practicality, though.
