You could argue that the XC90 is about as far from the concept of evoness as something possessing four wheels and an engine can be. But carry an impromptu automotive audit of the paddock at a top-end trackday or club race meeting and you’re almost certain to turn up at least a couple, proof that the big Volvo’s space, sensibleness and solid towing capacity gives it genuine crossover appeal.
Now, along with a mid-term facelift, it’s getting two new engines to add some previously lacking zing to proceedings. An excellent new 236bhp 3.2-litre in-line six replaces the wheezy old T6 unit. And the range-topping 4.4-litre V8, previously only available to left-hand drive markets, is now coming to the UK. It’s an unlikely rocketship. The Yamaha-developed engine is good for 313bhp, giving a claimed 0-60 of just 6.9sec, although top speed is unsportingly restricted to 130mph. It sounds great, too – big-cube V8 burble and a hard-edged redline wail.
Other parts of the 90’s dynamic demeanour remain as before: roll, squeal, modest limits and copious understeer. It’s a car that defies enthusiastic driving with a good-natured disdain. Far better to go with the flow – preferably with a be-trailered race-car hanging off the rear bumper.
