Slightly chunkier 17in alloys and heavier-looking tyres – visually that’s all that distinguishes the 1.4-litre Scirocco TSI from the full-strength 197bhp 2-litre. And for £387 of the £2K you’ve saved you can upgrade to 18s to complete the illusion.
Dynamically, the change is one of character rather than ability, the 1399cc twin-charger (supercharged and turbocharged) petrol engine’s 158bhp failing to seriously trouble the grip of the 235/45 tyres (235/40s on the 18s). You still get switchable comfort/sport magnetic dampers, though, and when pressing on the grip and balance of the chassis are as exemplary as ever.
It really is a jolly nice car, this Scirocco – dynamically polished, refined and well built. The 1.4 punches above its weight, especially low down, and delivers lower emissions too. However, the gearing is too long, the engine note plain and… well, there’s a missing spark. Unfortunately it’s the one that ignites desire.
