Noticed a light tapping sensation from the offside front tyre while travelling in Yorkshire a few weeks back. It felt like a large stone had lodged itself in the tyre tread, so as the road opened up I floored the glorious sounding V6 in an attempt to dislodge it. The 250bhp motor seems to be loosening up nicely now, with a noticeable step up in power from 5700 to the 6500rpm redline. Plus you get super-smooth gearchanges at maximum revs – a nice change from the usual rather jerky progress (though the gearshift itself is a vast improvement over the previous TT).
With the tricky series of bends on the A616 dispatched at maximum attack, the light ‘tapping’ was still there. The optional tyre sensors (£75) hadn’t flashed up any problems, but I stopped to have a look anyway. What I’d been feeling through the steering wheel was a screw embedded on the outside edge of the tyre. Luckily, no air was leaking out and the screw was far enough from the sidewall for the tyre to be repaired.
A week later and the tyre sensors flashed up a slow puncture on the right rear. This time a nail had embedded itself, but the handy electric pump put in enough air until a more convenient time for a fix. Must be the magnetic dampers exerting their influence…
