I was going to use this update to ask if any of you have seen an S5 on the road, for since ours arrived I hadn’t seen another example. So you can imagine my surprise when I recently saw not one but four S5s in a single day. Weird.
None, it has to be said, was red. Indeed all four were wearing much more predictable shades of silver and black. They looked good, if a little anonymous, and while I’m still not entirely convinced by our car’s shocking shade it certainly makes a statement.
I’d also like to start a debate on Audi’s eye-catching LED running lights. When I first saw them – on an Audi R8 – I was blown away. I also assumed that such a dramatic statement would be reserved for the brand’s first supercar. Then when they appeared on the S5 I was quite chuffed, as I’m a bit of a tart on the quiet. However, they are now available as an option on the new A4, and presumably every future Audi model will get them too, which to my mind destroys their appeal. True, there’s little difference between these daytime lights and driving around with your front foglights on, but you used to see so few LED-equipped Audis it didn’t seem to matter. Now that ubiquity has usurped uniqueness, the novelty, and dare I say status, is wearing thin. Worse still, it can only be a matter of months before Halfords starts selling retro-fit LED kits and these dazzling features become the next ‘Lexus rear lights’. At which point I’ll be scrolling through the S5’s control menu to switch the things off.
LEDs or not, I’m still loving the S5, save an intermittent but intensely annoying rattle-zizz-rattle that comes from the centre portion of the dash. A well-aimed blow seems to silence it for now, but if it persists I’ll have to put our local Audi dealership to the test.
