Lamborghini LP640

Twenty thousand miles have passed in the Lambo now, but a bearing noise is causing concern

Lamborghini LP640

The LP640 is still gobbling up the miles, I’m pleased to report, and with a trip to Le Mans amongst its recent journeys it’s now passed the big 20K. Just like my previous Murciélago long-termer its big V12 seems to have freed up nicely with the miles, too, so it’s now easier than ever to hit the rev limiter during a bit of ‘spirited’ driving!

The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that LP07 has gained a single GT40-like stripe this month. It was my business partner’s idea, I hasten to add, but now I’ve lived with it for a while I have to admit it sets off the LP640 pretty well. Unfortunately it has also recently acquired a nasty, wallet-munching grating noise, especially when accelerating in second. It sounds like a bearing of some kind, and I know from experience that gearbox work often means the engine has to come out – not the sort of thing a Lamborghini dealer can sort out by teatime. I’ll keep you posted.

Regular readers may remember the aforementioned Murciélago long-termer that frequented these pages for over three years. Well, the old girl has just smashed the 120,000-mile barrier and has had a bit of a makeover to compensate. Next month, in a ‘blast from the past’, I’ll report on how she’s coped with a mileage equivalent to almost five times round the planet…
