Jaguar XJR-R

The Jag has enjoyed a stay of execution. The press office rang up to set a date for its collection but, cunningly, I had committed it for a feature that would require it to be with us for another month or so. I shouldn't really say, but it's for an in-depth test of Shell's new high-octane fuel, Optimax, which claims to increase performance, partly by cleaning up engines. It means the Jag will have to cover 1500 miles exclusively on this new super unleaded petrol with performance figures taken before and after. You'll read the results, and those for the M Coupe and Civic Type-R, next month.

The test did mean that, although I've taken on the running of the Evo VII, I could legitimately bag plenty of miles in the XJR too. After an exclusive diet of full-on Mitsubishi, the contrast was even sharper than I'd anticipated, but within a few miles it was like being with an old friend. However, I was much more appreciative of the Jag's qualities, notably its hushed but storming performance and effortless comfort. Ah, you only miss what you had when it's gone, and two years and 30,000 miles together leave a deep impression. Talking of which, the police have so far drawn a blank on finding the culprits who damaged the bonnet, and I'm hoping one of the expert dent removal companies can repair it. If that's you, or you know someone that could, email us at fastfleet@evo.co.uk. Thanks.
