Car Reviews: Long Term Tests

Honda Civic Type-R

Lesson: when a colleague asks to borrow your car for 'a couple of laps' of Bedford Autodrome to set a benchmark time for Trackday Car of the Year (full story next month), just say no. By the time my Civic was 'done with' its brakes and front tyres were 'done for'. Still, the Honda felt more solid and rattle-free than most cars do after a heavy track session, but there were bemused looks at Holdens of Norwich when at 16,344 miles I asked them to replace the front pads. They weren't expecting to need any for Type-Rs for a good few months yet and had to order them specially. The old ones were totally shot so it was hard to begrudge the £94.72 replacement cost.

The Type-R is very sensitive to the condition of its front tyres and after the TCOTY session its front end was weaving all over the place and it had lost all frontal grip and stability. Treadfirst Tyres in Diss managed to find a pair of 'Defective Appearance' Bridgestones for just ΂£80 plus VAT and fitting each, which lessened the expected financial pain considerably. With new pads and tyres, the Type R feels back to rude health.

Prior to its track antics, I took the Honda on a job to northern Spain. I just managed to squeeze in its 12,000- mile service at Banks of Bury St Edmunds before hoofing down to Plymouth to catch the ferry to Santander. The ΂£123 service was all routine stuff, though they filled the sump with semi-synthetic oil, rather than the more expensive synth lube I'd recently topped it up with. It'd be interesting to know the long term difference between semi- and fully-synth oils.

Roughly 70 miles south of Bilbao there's a brilliant mountain road that's sometimes closed off for rally testing, and the Honda felt fantastic ripping up and down it. You have to work the engine and gearbox, but that's all part of the fun, especially when you're in the company of an Evo VII and a TVR Tuscan.

The Spanish caper further proved the Honda's practicality. Its optional air-con coped easily with temperatures chugging towards 27C, and the car proved less tiresome on the long drive back home than brief exposure to its noise levels would lead you to believe. My fondness for the R continues to grow.
