MG ZT-T+190

It's a bloke's car, the MG (none of your gay pride pink logos or white roofs here). It's the deep snout, mean-looking lights, all those wire-mesh grilles and the 18in alloys. And the way it drives, too - all of the controls feel beefy, almost gratuitously so. This struck me after driving the cars on eCOTY. The MG's clutch and gearchange make the Porsche feel like a Micra. And somehow Led Zep and Supergrass sound great on the hi-fi, while Dido and Eva Cassidy don't.

My ZT even has frequently steamed-up windows. Not, unfortunately, as a result of any unseemly in-car entertainment, though if you'd like to put the story about, it won't do my image any harm. The problem seems to stem from water ingress, something for the dealer to sort out when the MG goes in for service.

According to the dash readout there's a couple of thousand miles to go, but I swear the figure is going up, which can't be right. Call me a fuddy duddy old traditionalist, but 16,000 miles is a long time with the original oil slopping around the sump.

Well, some of it's still original. Had to dribble in another half-litre this month, though the ZT's appetite seems to be waning. Apart from that - and a very occasional misfire - the MG's still going well. I even had another ZT driver wave at me the other day; in a blokey, not at all limp-wristed way, obviously.
