Ford Forty-nine

Retro design is scaling new heights in the US at present. First there was the Thunderbird - which has been a huge success stateside - and the Forty-Nine Coupe, and last month saw the unveiling of the 'new' GT40. Indications are that the GT40 will make it into limited production due to overwhelmingly positive reaction at the Detroit Show.

Hopefully this Forty-Nine Convertible, latest of the 'Living Legends' products, will also become a production reality in the next two years. It uses the same 3.9-litre 32-valve V8 as the T-Bird but is said to have been tuned to match the hot-rod-inspired muscularity of the exterior.

Production chances are good, but for the moment the GT40 is taking priority. It'd be a shame to let the Forty-Nine concept die quietly, and the massive market for convertibles in the US is likely to ensure that doesn't happen.
