Mazda has released details of the latest evolution of its rotary engine, the RENESIS. The compact, naturally-aspirated engine produces an impressive 247bhp at 8500rpm and a slightly less impressive 159lb ft of torque right up at 7500rpm.

The RENESIS motor will power the RX-8 when it goes on sale in the UK in 2003. The rotary unit is remarkably small - at just 338mm tall it's the same height as the transmission.
