BMW CS1 Concept

MW's radical CS1 concept is said to provide clear clues to the look of the forthcoming 1-series which is due to go on sale in 2004. The car is the most radical break yet with BMW's traditional design cues and is sure to provoke a mixed reaction.

Like the controversial X-coupe concept revealed last year, it is the work of design chief Chris Bangle, who was also responsible for the new 7-series, which has not been universally well-received.

The good news is that BMW will stick to the traditional front-engine, rear-drive layout when it extends its range into VW Golf territory. The thinking is that any BMW should offer a pure driving experience and appeal to the enthusiast no matter what market segment it is in. The CS1 concept features BMW's 1.8-litre Valvetronic engine from the 316ti Compact hooked up to a version of the semi-manual SMG six-speed gearbox. The 1-series - which will be offered as a hatch, coupe or convertible - won't feature BMW's famed straight-six engines.
