Out is the old V8 unit and in its places is a 3.0-litre V6. Relax, though, it’s a supercharged FSI unit that chucks out a reported 345bhp.
The car itself is set to be subtly sportier than the all-new A4, with any major beefing up saved for an RS4 replacement – a car that will get a V8 at least on par with its predecessor.
The FSI unit, however, is likely to be shared across the Audi range, with the S5 and new Q5 being benefactors. As well as a smidgen of extra power, fuel consumption and carbon emissions should benefit from the big drop in cubic capacity and weight.
A detuned version of the new V6 will also make an appearance in the 5-series rivalling A6 when it receives a freshen-up later this year.
