While the changes are fairly low-key, the S3 range has doubled with the addition of the five-door Sportback.
It shares the 2.0 TFSI petrol engine with the three-door, producing 261bhp and 258lb ft, all available from a lowly 2,500rpm. The Sportback manages 0-62mph in 5.8sec, just 0.1sec slower than the regular hot hatch. Fuel consumption is a not unreasonable 27.7mpg.
Audi’s magnetic ride is an option too, allowing a firmed up ride when you want to have fun and a much smoother one on the rare occasion you don’t. Ride height is lowered by 25mm, and as usual, Quattro all-wheel drive is standard.
Looks wise, the S3 puts a bit more sport into Sportback with a subtle rear spoiler, aluminium effect side mirrors, and an R8-style flat-bottomed steering wheel. R8-style dynamics are unlikely, though. Expect the more practical S3 to be a very similar steer to the three-door.
The Sportback hits the roads alongside the rest of the tweaked A3 range in the summer, and should echo the £500 premium the Sportback normally asks over the three-door – around £27,500, in other words.
