The downturn in American car sales has finally hit the iconic Corvette

Production of Chevrolet’s sports car will be halted for a week from October 6, and when it resumes, production will be dipped to 18.5 cars per hour down to 15.

The Bowling Green factory will also see job cuts as America’s car buyers feel the pinch more and more.

Sales of the sixth-generation Corvette have slumped throughout 2008, and only really picked up in August when General Motors cut prices by as much as 10 per cent across its entire range.

The news comes as the brilliant new ZR1 launches the ‘Vette into true supercar territory – but taking its price tag with it.
