New diesel Scirocco tops range with 168bhp engine from Volkswagen Golf GTD

Volkswagen Scirocco GT TDI 170

The VW Scirocco range has swelled with the addition of another engine. The striking coupe gains the new 2-litre TDI diesel from the recently launched VW Golf GTD, and should hopefully answer our criticisms of the entry-level Scirocco diesel.

We drove the 138bhp 2-litre TDI and found the engine lacked sparkle, but hopefully the new unit will solve that. Power is up to 168bhp (at 4200rpm) while there’s 258lb ft of torque available from a lowly 1750rpm. The 0-62mph sprint takes 8.1sec, over a second quicker than the lesser TDI variant, while top speed is 138mph.

Of course, if you specify an oil-burning Scirocco then equally key figures will be fuel consumption and emissions – the new engine returns 53.3mpg (combined) and emissions of 139g/km with a manual gearbox, putting it in £110-a-year tax band E.

The new engine is only available in GT trim, meaning the car comes with a host of kit including two-zone climate control. New 19in Lugano alloys are on the Scirocco options list for the first time, too. Prices kick off at £21,755 for a manual, rising to £23,060 if you want Volkswagen’s acclaimed six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission.
