We all love an SUV, don’t we? Then stick June 5 in your diary – that’s the on sale date for the facelifted BMW X5. Intended to fight back against the Range Rover Sport, prices are up a little but all the engines are new or revised and all models come with an eight-speed gearbox, as well as leather and xenons.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the ungainly naming policy, kicked off by the £43,980 xDrive30d SE. The 3-litre diesel now gives you 242bhp to play with (up 10bhp), but perhaps more impressive depending on your viewpoint is the fact it’s the first luxury SUV to emit less than 200g/km of CO2. That means your road tax is £215 a year, compared with £405 for the Rangey TDV6/TDV8 driver.
Don’t get too excited about the £46,310 xDrive40d. It’s not a 4-litre V8 diesel, it’s the existing twin-turbo 3.0-litre, but now packs 302bhp, giving it a 0-60mph time of 6.6secs, a second faster than the outgoing 35d, yet it still squeezes itself below the 200g/km barrier.
The xDrive50i doesn’t, but then it does have a twin turbo 4.4-litre V8 to compensate. The vital stats are 402bhp, 0-60mph in 5.5secs, 292g/km, £55,080 and 442lb ft (the same as the 40d). If you want the M Sport pack – and stylistically we’re not convinced you do – it’s £4335 on the diesels, and £3095 on the petrol.
