Alfa 147 GTA

Alfa will provide stiff competition for the long-awaited Ford Focus RS when the 147 GTA is launched early in 2003. Bolstered by strong sales and the critical acclaim lavished upon the 156 GTA, the ultimate 147 will take the performance concept one stage further. It will retain the gorgeous 250bhp 3.2-litre V6 from the 156 GTA but insiders have confirmed that the chassis set-up will be totally uncompromising in its quest for driver satisfaction.

The success of Subaru and Mitsubishi's rally-derived supercar-slayers has proved that there is a significant market for no-frills sports cars and Alfa wants to be the first European manufacturer to grasp the nettle. The hot 147 will be front-wheel drive but Alfa's chassis engineers are confident that they have found levels of traction and grip to surpass any front-driver yet made.

Encouragingly, Alfa insiders are also making great claims for the adjustable nature of the GTA's on-limit handling. Alfa has always wanted a two-pronged attack on the performance sector. The 156 GTA is the refined grand-tourer with a sporting edge and the 147 will be the ultra-responsive, back-to-basics sports car aimed squarely at the committed enthusiast. Expect it to smoke to 60 in a tad under six seconds and run on to 155mph. The 147 GTA will be offered with either six-speed manual or the latest Selespeed sequential transmissions and should cost around £23,000 when it hits the UK.

The increasing trend for highly developed performance flagships continues worldwide. Despite attempts by various groups to make driving an anti-social activity it seems the death of the performance car has been greatly exaggerated.
