The Audi S1 is dead. Probably. If that’s the case (and we hope it’s not) then this, the A1 1.4 TFSI (136kw), will be the most powerful A1 you can get your hands on. Kw stands for kilowatts of course and translates as 182bhp – enough to give the A1 the power and pace to rival Mini’s Cooper S and the Renaultsport Clio 200.
Whether it has the talent to out-handle such rivals remains to be seen, considering the lukewarm reception we gave the standard A1.
Due to be launched at the Paris motor show next week, the flagship A1 features the S tronic double clutch gearbox as standard, can return 47.9mpg on the combined cycle and puts out 139g/km of CO2.
What you really want to know of course is that the turbo and supercharged A1 (it uses the same powerplant as the VW Polo GTI and Skoda Fabia vRS, albeit with an extra 4bhp) can shoot from 0-60mph in 6.9sec and hit 141mph all out.
The supercharger is active from 1500rpm, before progressively handing over to the turbo higher up, helping deliver a maximum of 184lb ft of torque. There’s no word on UK pricing yet, but on the continent this A1 will cost 24,250 euros.
