Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racing car revealed

More details of the new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racing car, based on the brilliant 997.2 GT3 RS supercar

Porsche has revealed further details of its new 911 GT3 Cup. It’s the latest version of the best-selling racing car ever, with 1400 finding drivers and teams since its 1998 introduction. And it's based pretty heavily on the 911 GT3 RS road car. While its weight is significantly reduced over the production supercar (1200kg v the GT3 RS’s 1370kg), the 444bhp 3.8-litre flat-six engine remains intact, with the same 8500rpm maximum. It just goes to show how hardcore the performance of Porsche’s road cars has become that their race equivalent is so closely related. Other remnants from the road-going car include the 44mm wider rear body and many of the front and rear panels, as well as daytime running lights and rear LEDs. There is a much greater emphasis on downforce, though, with a 15mm lower front spoiler lip and a chunkier wing at the back. There’s also that inevitable weight loss.

REVIEW: Chris Harris drives the new 911 GT3 Cup The chassis boasts a widely adjustable setup, with additional Unibal joints for the front and rear suspension and sword-shaped anti-roll bars which offer seven different positions. The interior is also race ready, with steering wheel controls for the pit-lane speed limiter, windscreen wipers and lights and an additional air vent to keep its driver extra cool. The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is primed for use in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB – the UK’s fastest single marque sports car championship – and the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup, which supports rounds of Formula 1. It's already appeared in the latter this year. The 911 GT3 Cup is priced £94,600 plus VAT. With 20 per cent tax applied, you’ll pay £113,520 – a premium of less than £10,000 over its road-going supercar equivalent.
