Toyota’s vast stand at the Tokyo motor show gave a chance to see the GT 86 up close for the first time. At least, you could if you were able to fight through the crowds of unwashed journos who surrounded it throughout press day. It’s fair to say that Japan is definitely excited by this car.
As with the Subaru BRZ, it was hard not to feel slightly disappointed at how much the two cars have in common – if they don’t drive substantially differently we’re effectively looking at a pair of badge-engineered clones. Getting up close also gave a chance to see where money had been saved with some surprisingly cheap-feeling materials on display – Toyota and Subaru are both being hit by the high value of the Yen against other major currencies.
Toyota also showed off a next-generation Prius concept plus a surprisingly cool looking baby hybrid, dubbed the Aqua.
