Fiery Corsa

Vauxhall's sporting intentions will extend below the Vectra. A hot Corsa GSi/OPC has already been seen, powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine. GM insiders have also admitted that a prototype 200bhp Corsa is under evaluation: it's being described as 'a bit edgy'.

Although there's a revised Corsa this September, Vauxhall/Opel hasn't decided whether to introduce a super-hot version or wait for another few years for the all-new next-generation model. It's being emphasised that the introduction of GSi/OPC models and 'warm' performance cars will be rolled out over time and won't be a hasty attempt at re-branding.

"In general we'll be looking to give the brand more style but also more of a performance edge in terms of both power and chassis performance," an insider told evo.

The idea of another sub-brand for the company's mid-range performance cars is also being kicked around and they could be dubbed VXR. But Vauxhall will need to spend time with Lotus chassis experts to give their hot cars UK credibility. Insiders are already confident that the abilities of this autumn's mk5 Astra will be a wake-up call to rivals.
