Return Of The 911RS

The legendary Porsche RS is finally back. Production of the GT3 RS, the ultimate expression of the current-generation 911, starts this October, with UK deliveries a month later. Porsche uses the revered RS tag sparingly and fans been waiting for a genuine no-frills 911 since the demise of the 993 RS in 1995. The GT3 of '99 gave us a taste of what to expect and the new GT3 has further whetted our appetite, but now the GT3 RS is set to deliver the pure hit of 911 that enthusiasts have craved.

The RS shares its engine with the standard GT3 (381bhp at 7300rpm) but the 50kg weight saving helps shave a tenth off the 4.5sec 0-62mph time. The new lightweight's top speed is 191mph. Driving a close-ratio six-speed box, the engine's maximum speed is 8200rpm and the unit develops 105.8bhp per litre.

It doesn't sound like a huge performance gain, admittedly, but Porsche claims that the character of the RS is dramatically different. It gets a full rollcage, carbonfibre bonnet and rear wing, lightened dash and doors, and a Perspex rear screen.

The GT3 RS is an homologation special designed to satisfy new international GT racing regulations and as such has a number of features over and above the weight-saving measures.

Most significant of these motorsport-inspired modifications are the divided front and rear lateral suspension control arms and optimised rear-axle geometry. It also has a single-mass flywheel to improve engine response, and an air collector under the rear spoiler that provides extra cooling to the engine as speed and pressure builds. Porsche's lightweight ceramic-composite brakes (PCCB) are a ΂£4558 option. There will be around 60 right-hand-drive GT3 RSs brought to the UK (from a total production run of around 300) at a price of ΂£84,230. That's ΂£11,480 more than the GT3, but demand is, predictably, far outpacing supply.

In common with the iconic 2.7 RS from the early 1970s, the GT3 RS is only available in white, with either red or blue script and wheels. UK deliveries begin in late November.
