Porsche 911
Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet

After a break of some 14 years, Porsche has reinvented the 911 Turbo Cabriolet, one of the more questionable Porsches of the late '80s. However, this new model - expected to be the last major 996 variation - is a world away from the old 930-series machine.

The bodyshell's makeover includes reinforced sills and 'junction plates', while some panels have been doubled in thickness. This is also the first Porsche sports car to get 'shaft reinforcement' behind the B-pillar. These are made from ultra-strong DP600 steel and are both bonded and welded into place.

The changes add 120kg to the kerb weight (1660kg) but performance is still blistering with 420bhp on tap. Porsche claims 4.3sec for the dash to 62mph and a 9.9sec 0-100mph time. It will run on to 189mph. Wind-in-the-hair motoring indeed. The electric hood takes 20 seconds to lower and is stored under a metal cover. Prices start at ΂£96,130 when the Turbo goes on sale in the autumn.
