Official 6-Series Pictures

These are the first official shots of the new BMW 6-series, a name revived after a 14-year lay-off. Initially there will be only one model - the 645Ci - powered by a 4.4-litre V8 Valvetronic engine. It makes its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in early September and goes on sale in the UK from December. Expect to pay around £55,000 for the privilege of ownership. A cabrio version will be launched in 2004.

With 333bhp and 332lb ft of torque, the car will hit 62mph in a claimed 5.6sec, although its top speed is limited to 155mph. The performance should be enhanced by a lithe all-up weight of just 1600kg. The bonnet, doors and 'entire front body structure' are made of aluminium, the front wings from thermoplastics and the boot lid from 'Sheet Moulding Compound', says BMW.

There's a choice of three six-speed transmissions: a manual six-speed, a six-speed automatic with Steptronic, and a Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) with both paddles and a console-mounted gearlever. Dynamic Drive (effectively, active anti-roll bars) and Active Steering are options on the big coupe, as is DDC. Driving Dynamics Control, which is operated by a 'Sport' switch on the dash, sharpens up throttle reaction, produces a more direct feeling for the steering and - when combined with SMG or Steptronic - shifts gears at higher rpm.

'Adaptive headlights' (which swivel to follow the front wheels), and a head-up display are also on the options list. Run-flat tyres (which allow the driver to do another 90 miles at up to 50mph) are standard equipment.
