Insiders say the production version of the three-door has barely changed from the concept though the rear roofline has been lifted.
Vauxhall is also looking at a 'cheaper' VXR-branded 1.8-litre Corsa in an attempt to break back into the junior hot hatch market currently dominated by Citroί¿½n and MG Rover. This model could also be unveiled at Birmingham. Plans for a turbocharged engine during the lifetime of the current car have been dropped, but the next-generation Corsa will get a turbo unit. Another possible for the VXR launch is a 'sprint' version of the VX220 roadster.
Vauxhall is also considering bringing the new twin-turbo 1.9-litre turbodiesel Vectra OPC (left and above) to the UK. Recently unveiled at the Essen motor show, it develops 207bhp and a massive 295lb ft of torque from just 1300rpm to 3500rpm.
But Vauxhall has shelved plans for the supercharged Vectra (evo 058). The new strategy calls instead for a turbocharged V6 Vectra powered by the new GM 'Global' engine that's fitted to the Alfa GT coupe. This Vectra VXR isn't expected for another 18 months at least, coinciding with a probable facelift of the whole range.
