Quattro Revisions

Audi engineers are working on re-engineering the familiar quattro all-wheel-drive system, a senior source told evo. The basic quattro layout was established in the late 1970s and has only seen one major revision - in 1986, when a Torsen diff was added, which allowed the engine's torque to be shifted between the front and rear wheels in real time.

Our source would be no more specific than saying 'a number of new ideas are being assessed' but the major work is probably aimed at quelling criticism of Audi's nose-heavy stance and what's often viewed as a lack of steering feel. It's not yet known what form the mods will take, but we'd bet the drivetrain will get an in-built rearward-torque bias.

It's also likely there will be further moves to reposition the engine further back in the chassis. If a specific quattro transmission is designed, it could be that Audi ends up with two distinct drivetrain structures: one front-drive, one all-wheel-drive. Keen drivers can then plump for the quattro version.

However, another source told evo that the work was being done 'partly to please journalists', since criticisms of Audi's quatrro chassis are not widely reflected by actual buyers of Audi product.
