Jaguar is 'doing the maths' on building a production version of its radical RD6 hatchback. If given the green light it will use a new rear-drive chassis. A source said the RD6 was a 'strong hint at a compact' - which means Jag wants to build a rival to BMW's 1-Series.

The news means that Jaguar's commissioning of a new (probably steel) rear-drive chassis could see the next X-type switch to rear drive. It could also revive hopes of an 'F-type' roadster. Expect future Jags to switch back to straight-six engines - Volvo's unit is being re-engineered and will be built in the UK from next year.
