Tigra Joins Coupe/cab Clan

The fashion for folding-roof 'convertible-coupes' has produced another follower - Vauxhall's new Tigra. It's based on the current Corsa chassis and is a strict two-seater. The electro-hydraulic roof operates at the touch of a button and shouldn't consume any luggage space as it slips in behind the seats. The integrated roll- bar design is particularly neat, and the Tigra's boxy, edgy look indicates the way ahead for future Vauxhalls.

Although company engineers promise that the Corsa's chassis has been thoroughly re-worked (the original Tigra was terrible to drive) the initial engine range doesn't hold much evo interest: a 90bhp 1.4 or a punchier 125bhp 1.8. Eventually a 150bhp motor may be offered.

Two-tone bucket seats are standard and the cabin gets chrome-rimmed instruments and aluminium detailing. Prices could start from as little as ΂£10,000. The Tigra will be built by the French coachbuilder Groupe Henri Heuliez S.A.
