Faster Fiestas

Ford sprang a surprise at Geneva by rolling out a prototype Fiesta RS alongside the new 148bhp Fiesta ST. Clearly inspired by the Rallye Concept and Junior WRC Fiestas, the RS is a no-holds-barred baby super hatch. It's wide stance (it rolls on 18in wheels), extended arches, hooped roof spoiler and deep bumpers are all related to this November's ST but in the tin are far more eye-catching. The interior boasts sports seats and a Momo steering wheel. The RS was sketched by TeamRS chief designer Chris Clements, also responsible for the ST.

Under the bonnet is a tuned version of the Mondeo's 2-litre Duratec HE unit. Ford will only say that the final production version - which isn't expected until late 2005 - will develop 'around 180bhp'. Many observers were surprised to hear that the RS doesn't have a turbocharger and more power.

However, TeamRS boss Jost Capito hinted that performance cars from his team would probably trade headline power figures for ultimate driving dynamics. Also, being relatively light, the Fiesta can live without forced induction.

Ford also hinted that it intends the RS to be have potential 'for aftermarket tuning'. It believes 'the concept's dynamic capabilities would allow aftermarket tuners to derive even more powerful versions'.

The RS is expected to cost around ΂£16,000, about ΂£1500 more than the 179bhp Renault Sport Clio 182.
