Dual Brake-Through?

In light of last month's news story about problems with Porsche's ceramic brake technology, here's an intriguing new brake idea. Automotive component giant Delphi's Maximum Torque Brake system uses two plain steel discs gripped by a single calliper. Delphi says that because the design provides four cooling surfaces, heat-dispersion is massively improved and the need for vanes or cooling channels eliminated.

The brake also needs about half the pedal pressure of a normal system despite delivering up to 1.7 times the stopping power. It's also claimed that the system is no heavier than a standard single disc because the rotors are much smaller. The company told evo that pedal feel is much improved because there is much less hydraulic fluid in the system, and there's no need to fit huge wheels simply to allow for giant-size discs. The technology is on the shelf and ready to go.
