New 3-Series Revealed

The pictures shown in this month's evo should have been under wraps until next February and the official launch of the all-new 3-Series at the Geneva motor show, but a serious internal leak has forced BMW to reveal its hand prematurely.

Codenamed E90, the new 3-Series retains the established formula of rear-drive and 50/50 weight distribution. Related to the 1-Series, it uses MacPherson front struts and a multi-link rear axle. Despite claims of extensive use of aluminium and magnesium, the new car is marginally heavier than the current E46 3-Series as it's marginally longer and wider. An extra 35mm in the wheelbase improves rear legroom.

evo interest will start with the new six-pot engines. Based on a magnesium/aluminum-alloy block, the 325i should develop over 210bhp and hit 60mph in less than 7.0sec. The 330i should be good for 255bhp. The 318i and 320i will be carried over but the 1-Series may make the 316i redundant. The highly regarded 330d six-cylinder turbodiesel gets another boost in power and torque, making it a contender for the performance leader of the bunch.

The new 3-Series has two different facias, the more upmarket version housing a large TV screen which works in tandem with the controversial i-Drive system.

Following the saloon, there'll be touring, coupe and cabriolet versions; it's rumoured the latter two will be badged 4-Series, though the M-Series coupe will apparently keep its classic M3 tag.

UK sales of the new 3-Series start in early summer 2005.
