Blown Exige

Lotus has launched a limited edition, supercharged and intercooled Exige called the 240R. Developed by Lotus Sport, the 240R gets 243bhp (compared with 189bhp for the standard Exige), 170lb ft of torque (133) and has a power-to-weight ratio of 261bhp per ton (219). Performance gets a useful boost - 0-60mph is rattled off in under 4sec (4.9).

The track-focused 240R also gets suspension goodies including stiffer springs, allied to two-way adjustable Ohlins dampers, and an adjustable front anti-roll bar. Twin oil coolers, an Accusump and uprated brakes are further proof of its serious intent, as are new, wider, lightweight forged alloys capable of accommodating slicks as well as the standard Yokohama AO48s.

The 240R costs ΂£43,995 and comes in Sport Yellow or Sport Black. Though just 50 will be built, the parts to replicate a 240R should all eventually be available as aftermarket options through Lotus Sport.

Lotus has also revealed its Versatile Vehicle Architecture (VVA) technology. It's a highly adaptable means of making a low-volume vehicle platform using several core components to create a variety of models from the same basic bits. So from one platform you could build a mid-engined supercar (here labelled Esprit!), a 'crossover' 4x4 and a front-engined luxury saloon.
