New Leon Roars Out

If the current Golf GTI is a little too bland for your liking, perhaps the new SEAT Leon will be more to your taste. SEAT, along with Lamborghini and Audi, makes up the 'sporting' arm of VAG, so forthcoming Cupra models are likely to be even more hardcore than our current favourite hatch.

Similarly, while Volkswagen has to retain relatively uncontroversial designs in order to appeal to the widest audience, SEAT, with less ambitious sales targets, can inject more flair into its cars. The Salsa Concept, shown in 2000, has been taken as the company's basic design DNA, and the core models in its range - Ibiza, Leon and Altea - are gradually being emboldened. Also, a 'halo' roadster model has not been ruled out.

The hot Leon prototype that you see here is a fully working model, which we drove recently in Spain. It is fitted with the fine 2-litre turbo engine from the Golf GTI and the remarkable if uninvolving DSG 'box. We weren't allowed to drive hard in this one-off, so proper driving impressions will have to wait, but what was obvious was that the car feels fundamentally right and looks absolutely stunning. Inevitably some details won't make it onto the production model. The central tailpipe will go (apparently some people tow things) and the bumpers and 19in wheels will shrink. The omens, however, are very good.
