Return Of the Carrera 4

Porsche has announced details of four-wheel-drive variants for the 997 Carrera line-up. The Carrera 4 and 4S will both be stretched by 44mm across their rear haunches, allowing larger rear tyres to be fitted; 295/35 ZR18s on the less powerful model, and 305/30 ZR19s on the S. Both variants have the multi-disc viscous coupling of the previous Carrera 4, transferring between five and 40 per cent of tractive force to the front wheels when the rears start to lose grip.

The PSM stability system has two new features for the already legendary Porsche brakes. The first of these features pre-fills the braking system in preparation for a full-on braking effort. This ensures that there is no air gap between pads and disc and thus reduces stopping distances even further. The second update is a 'brake assist' set-up that automatically pumps up the braking pressure when it senses an emergency stop.

Sports suspension - firmer springs and dampers, a 20mm drop in ride height and a rear diff lock - is optional on both models, while the C4S gets Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard.

The performance and power figures for the Carrera 4 and 4S remain unchanged from their two-wheel-drive counterparts. The UK gets the two new models in late October, priced at ΂£62,930 and ΂£69,900 respectively.

And finally, giving a hint as to what the 997 GT3 could look like, Porsche has released a mouth-watering photograph of the new 997 Cup car. A version of this is already racing globally in the Supercup and it will form the basis for the next three years of the GB Carrera Cup until 2008.
