The 'gentlemen's' agreement between the mainstream German car makers to electronically limit the top speed of their cars to 155mph may be abandoned, in much the same way that the Japanese recently decided to stop restricting peak power output to an arbitrary 280PS (276bhp).

In the past it has been possible to ask your dealer to remove the limiter on some cars, but with the increased speed of even Golf/Focus class cars, the likes of Mercedes, Audi and BMW are obviously thinking of once again putting distance between their autobahn- stormers and the rest of the pack.
Porsche, of course, has never bothered with limiters, as evidenced in the picture of a flat-out Carrera GT.
