Prodrive to make own car

Keen to prove that its talents extend beyond running successful WRC and GT racing teams and purveying go-faster goodies for Subarus, Prodrive is to reveal this two-seater road car, the P2, at the Autosport show at the NEC in mid-January.

Engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive lifted from Impreza STi. Chassis and lightweight body Prodrive's own work
Designed, engineered and built entirely in-house, the P2 will showcase two Prodrive innovations - ADT, which is the Banbury firm's own active handling and traction control system, and a road-going anti-lag system, similar to the rally set-up that keeps a turbocharger always on the boil for better throttle response, but without the accompanying flames and explosions.

Prodrive insists that the P2, styled by Peter Stevens, whose portfolio includes WRC Imprezas and the roadgoing P1, isn't intended for production but is a 'technology demonstrator' that hammers home the point that the company is a fully-fledged motorsport and automotive technology specialist. However, Prodrive has thoughtfully worked out a potential price for the car - about £40K if it were to go into limited production, which it won't...

The P2 has an Impreza STi engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive system. Another 'loan' from Subaru is the cabin - albeit extensively reworked - and the bulkhead of the R1 microcar. To all this Prodrive has added its own chassis, suspension, lightweight composite bodywork, aerodynamics, electronics and set-up expertise.

With weight down around 1100kg, the P2 should be a real flyer, with an agility that a taller, heavier Impreza could only dream of.
