Detroit flexes its muscle

For the home crowd, the Camaro concept (image) was the toast of Detroit. Maybe the enthusiasm was stoked by the sight and sound of five hot 1969 models and the mind-altering effect of their emissions, but the new Camaro got a huge cheer.

Like the Mustang, its style is a nod to the original but forward-looking with it. The engine is the Corvette's all-alloy
Chevy small-block V8, here with 6 litres, 400bhp and a cylinder shutdown system for better economy (Americans are smarting from the US gallon's recent but brief foray over ).

If it goes into production in 2008, the idea is to build it on the GM Zeta platform intended mainly for the next Holden Commodore, although UK-based GM designer Simon Cox said the concept car was on Corvette underpinnings. Whatever, it will have proper independent suspension allround - one-up on both the old Camaro and the current Mustang.
