production, but it's a near certainty the company will enter the 'executive hatchback' segment, once the domain of the Rover 800.
In addition to showcasing a new body-style, the Roadjet contains technology that will filter through to all Audis during the next few years. Likely to be first up (and also to feature in the new TT) is a 296bhp version of the direct injection petrol, or FSI, 3.2-litre V6.
It will be accompanied by a revised seven-speed DSG gearbox, that for the first time (Bugatti Veyron aside)
can be married to a longitudinallymounted engine.
Other highlights include Audi Drive Select, a system which can be run in Comfort, Dynamic or Sport modes to alter the
responses of the dampers, engine, transmission and steering as a unified package.
An embryonic technology featured in the Roadjet is car-to-car communication, which can signal to other cars when you've broken down, for instance, warning of the obstruction. Using roadside sensors it can also advise on the best speed to avoid stop-starting in heavy traffic, and even alert you to empty parking spaces.
