Volvo C30 targets Golf GTI

Although tagged as merely a show car, the C30 Design Concept that Volvo unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show isn't far off what the production model will look like when it debuts in Paris this September. And with the C30 based on what is effectively the Ford Focus platform, the Swedes will be hoping that the car's driving dynamics have what it takes to tackle others in the premium compact car sector.

Distinctively attractive in three-door form, the C30 could become an interesting alternative to the Golf GTI if it retains the concept's drivetrain - a turbocharged five-cylinder engine producing 260bhp and 268lb ft of torque, promising a top speed of 155mph and 0-62mph in 6.0sec.

A few market sectors up, an all-new Volvo S80 will be launched at Geneva next month. The top model is powered by a 311bhp V8 driving all four wheels, and Volvo claims much-improved dynamics over its predecessor after benchmarking the new car against the BMW 5-series during development. It will be in UK showrooms this summer.
