Hot new Clio shows its mettle

The weight of expectation rests heavy on the broad shoulders of this, the new £16,500 Renaultsport Clio 197, replacement for the much-loved, supercar-humbling Clio 182, Cup and Trophy. The successor to the king of hot hatches goes on sale in June and is bigger and heavier than the car it replaces. Yet it boasts only a modest power increase, up from 180 to 194bhp (the '197' moniker refers to its power in PS), so does this mean that Renault has fumbled?

Don't bet on it. An extraordinary amount of development has gone into a derivative that, in the grand scheme of things, will sell in relatively small numbers, showing Renault's commitment to remaining top of the hot hatch pile. Compared with the mainstream mk3 Clios, the wheelbase of the Renaultsport machine is 10mm longer while its front and rear tracks are broader by 48mm and 50mm respectively. The floorpan is altered, too, with the spare wheel well beneath the boot flattened-off to make space for the sports exhaust to run - the spare wheel is replaced by a couple of cans of tyre inflator.
