Lotus proves a point

Last year Lotus Engineering went to Geneva with its Versatile Vehicle Architecture - VVA - in the form of a floorpan that could be (relatively) easily adapted from mid-engined supercar to front-engined saloon to off-roader; this year VVA is back with a bodyshell as a more vivid example of how the system works.

But don't mistake the APX - a lightweight 'crossover' vehicle that's part sports car, part saloon - for a future Lotus product. The company says that it's a 'concept car' in the purest form of the term. In addition to the APX itself, Lotus also showed design drawings of a diverse range of other cars that could be built up from the same basic floorpan components.

Another interesting element of the APX is its Lotus-designed 300bhp supercharged V6 engine; again Lotus claims that the main aim of this powerplant is to show that the company could manage such a project in a short space of time, but that it has no plans to produce it for the moment.
