Opel GT makes a comeback

Based on the Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice but powered by a turbocharged 2-litre four-cylinder engine boasting 256bhp, this British-designed roadster will be badged Opel GT when it goes on sale throughout Europe early in 2007. It's left-hand drive only but Vauxhall is training some of its dealers to handle the servicing of cars it expects to be personally imported.

A very different car to the VX220 that it essentially replaces, the Opel GT is much more of a mainstream roadster, with refinement and practicality enjoying higher priority than ultimate driving pleasure in its dynamic make-up.

Although we were severely disappointed by its American cousin, the Solstice, when we drove it in issue 086, we're hoping that with development for European tastes and a fresh engine, the rear-drive two-seater will fulfil its promise. Performance shouldn't be an issue, with a claimed top speed of 143mph and 0-62mph in less than 6.0sec.

The GT's looks are derived from those of the Vauxhall Lightning concept car created in GM's Advanced Design Studio in Birmingham, but the Opel will be produced on a line in Delaware, USA, alongside the Sky and Solstice. Prices are expected to start at the equivalent of £20,000.
