Renault's dream car

Renault's new CEO, Carlos Ghosn, confessed in an interview at the Geneva show that although the company is due to launch 24 new models over the next three years, there were no sports cars on the schedule - but that's about to change.

Rumoured not to be a fan of motor racing, Ghosn nevertheless admitted that 'F1 has been a good investment because we're winning and it's the queen of sports - 800,000 to 1-billion people watch it every fortnight.' And it's perhaps this recognition of the 'halo effect' of racing and sports cars that has led Renault to add a couple of genuine sports cars to its ambitious future plans.

'On top of what we already have planned we need to have a specific sports car,' reckoned Ghosn, 'so that's what we're working on now, a dream car.' But asked if this could be a new Alpine, Ghosn cautioned, 'Let's talk about the baby before worrying about the name. We need a very strong product before considering what to call it.' Ghosn hinted that any sports car would probably need to be Renault badged, but did concede its development could be farmed out. The Spider (image) was built by at the Alpine factory in Dieppe.
