404BHP-per-ton superlight blows in

Caterham has launched the Superlight R400, complete with Cosworth-developed 2-litre four-cylinder Duratec engine, 525kg kerbweight, 404bhp-per-ton power-to-weight ratio, and 3.8sec 0-60mph performance.

Essentially the road-going version of the C400 racer tested in evo 091, the Superlight R400 is based on the traditional Seven rather than the new CSR derivative although, thanks to a switch of supplier, its tubular chassis is 14 per cent more rigid than before, which is claimed to increase grip and improve handling.

The change to the 210bhp, 150lb ft Duratec 16-valve powerplant effectively spells the beginning of the end for the trusty K-series that has done service in many Seven derivatives.

Sales of the Superlight R400 should start this August; it costs £29,495 fully-built, or £26,995 if you're prepared to do some of the build work yourself. There's already a waiting list.
