Elise gets back to basics

Lotus is bringing back the basic Elise, minus the K-series engine. The new entry-level car will be powered by a 130bhp, 1.8-litre four-cylinder Toyota unit, similar to that found in the dearly departed MR2.

At the time of going to press, Lotus had yet to confirm the car's existence or its likely price, but as the last 'entry-level' Elise retailed at about £23,000, expect it to be around that mark plus a few quid extra for inflation. Equipment levels will be commendably spartan, the options list extensive.

It's ten years since the launch of the original Elise. Costing less than £20K, it arrived on the market as close to a track car as you could get while still being useable on a daily basis. However, despite loving the concept of a stripped-out lightweight, most owners loaded their Elises with numerous options, pushing up the price and weight.

Enthusiasts will hope that the return to a 'purer' version of the quintessential sports car will spur other manufacturers to follow suit.
