This Month's evo
August 2006 evo (issue 94)

Two variants of Stuttgart's finest - the 911 Turbo and a Carrera GT - face off against working class hero, the Mitsi Evo IX, in our cover story group test. The Turbo then takes on a Gallardo, and we road test an 800hp Koenigsegg - in the rain!

Planet evo

Arash Farboud is creating a new car, Porsche has unveiled its GT3 RS (in orange - nice) and the Jaguar XKR has revealed its curves to Andy Morgan's lens. Meanwhile, Richard Porter has found some slippers in his wardrobe.

Letters

Readers of a sensitive nature in Sweden and Norway avert your eyes - this month we hear about the Honda Fitta. Meanwhile, apparently you loved the Ferrari 599 and 550 feature, but someone thinks Harry should walk to the launch next time.

Driven

Clio Renaultsport 197, Mini Cooper S Works GP, Porsche 911 Carrera S Powerkit, Alfa Brera Spider, Chevrolet Camaro Concept, Audi RS4 Cabriolet, BMW 320si, Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG, Bentley Azure, Panoz Esperante GTLM, BMW Z4 3.0i Sport, Peugeot 207 RCup.

Audi TT v Nissan 350Z

The TT's time as a style icon has passed, but the new one should be much better to drive. Question is, how much better? Jethro Bovingdon pits it against the old-school charms of the Nissan 350Z.

The Science of Speed

Porsche Carrera GT, the new 911 Turbo, and Mitsubishi's Evo IX.
Three very special cars, three very disparate price points. Richard Meaden investigates just how much separates them, on circuit, proving ground and Welsh blacktop...

911 Turbo Group Test

...then the Turbo takes on Lamborghini's scalpel-sharp Gallardo and Bentley's plush Continental GT. Can the new Porsche be both supercar and GT? Can one really both possess and consume one's Victoria sponge? John Barker wields the cake fork.

Nurburgring 24 hours

Dickie Meaden gets what he's always wanted: a drive in a nightmarishly scary 24-hour race amongst other nutters on the most terrifying circuit on the planet. Sounds like fun.

Le Mans or bust!

It looks fantastic. There are roundels, 'Team evo' decals on the side, and a wonderful wood-rimmed steering wheel topping it all off. Yup, the Westfield is all ready for Le Mans. The only thing that can go wrong now is that 32-year-old MG Midget engine...

Koenigsegg road test

806bhp, no traction control, and a reputation for flinging professional racing drivers off the black stuff. Now the big bad Swedish supercar is put up against the big bad John Barker road test. One of them smokes, the other one spits flames.

Atom v Brooke v Caterham

Three lightweights - not the sort that dance badly after a couple of lager tops on a Friday night, but the sort that are brilliant on a deserted road on a Sunday morning. Henry 'Pimms o'clock' Catchpole adjudicates.

Long-term tests

Peter Tomalin has been driving around in an AM V8 this month. Tony Bailey can't find his, so Peter's kindly lent him the Jag. Sadly, the Porsche is leaving us, as is Harry's Ferrari 550. Time for him to ponder what could possibly make a worthy replacement.

'Ring project car

The eight-minute M3 is now talked about in hushed tones around the 'Ring. Some say it's fiction, others say it's made from Ikea cupboards and a Moulinex. Jethro goes back to Germany to dispel some myths.

Subscriptions

Sign up, save a wedge and get a nice clean cover. It's all the rage, you know.

The Knowledge

Every performance car reviewed and rated (as they used to say).

Birth of an Icon

The first 911 Turbo was scary with just 260bhp. And yet they say men were men back then. Go figure.
