New 80mph motorway speed limit

The British motorway speed limit is set to rise from 70mph to 80mph. What do you think?

80mph motorway speed limit

The motorway speed limit in the UK is set to rise. Reports suggest the current 70mph cap will climb to 80mph by 2013, under plans to be proposed by the Government’s Transport Secretary Phillip Hammond next week. The move will be accompanied by an influx of new 20mph zones in town and cities. Government statistics suggest nearly half of British motorists exceeded the 70mph speed limit in 2010, with 14 per cent of drivers passing 80mph.

With so many drivers currently willing to travel at 80mph or above, a similar proportion could raise their margin and drive at 90mph-plus should the limit be raised, the potential risk of accidents and the country’s average fuel consumption surely rising too. Any speed limit changes could be accompanied by more rigorous police enforcement. What do you think of the new limit, or will it make no difference to the way you drive?
