The Q5’s favouring of petrol variants may seem like an odd angle for an SUV, but the latest 2.0 TFSI engine is surprisingly frugal. On paper at least, an average combined rating of 40.9mpg (on 18-inch wheels) makes impressive reading. The 2.0 TDI goes as high as 56.5mpg, though, so if your daily commute is lengthy, you might find the diesel to be a better bet in the long run.

For context, a Mercedes-Benz GLC diesel hovers at an identical 56.5mpg, while the new X3 will also use about the same amount. The SQ5 is predictably thirsty at 34mph, but is no worse than the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 and upcoming BMW X3 M40i.
